2. "Day of Infamy" means that it was a day gone bad because Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor.

4. The attack on Pearl Harbor just happened before 8 am, near Honolulu, Hawaii. The Japanese army destroyed 20 of the American vessels, 8 enormous battleships, and more than 300 planes that day. There were 2,000 of our American soldiers that died that day and there were a 1,000 wounded. The President, at the time, was FDR, and he asked if America could declare war on Japan, but Congress approved it with one dissenting vote. How this war got started was because America didn't like that Japan was getting closer to China because we were great friends with China for trading stuff. No one knew why Japan would attack Hawaii because it's 4,000 miles away from them. But we also thought the attack would happen in one of the nearby European countries, but that didn't come to be. Since no one knew about the attack, Pearl Harbor was undefended. On the day of the attack, Japan dropped a 1,800-pound bomb on our USS Arizona and there were 1,000 men trapped on that boat and never got out. After that day, there were 7 battleships that were completely destroyed, but 2 of them were able to be repaired and then FDR came out with his speech about what happened that past day. He came out with that speech because nobody knew of what happened because the attack was unplanned. But America got stronger after that attack at Pearl Harbor and we rebuilt our strength and got even stronger. December 7, 1941 will never be forgotten.
